For me, the coolest thing about blues players is their attitude in their playing, they aren’t afraid to hit those strings! In the world of technique and speed we forget some of the most important things in music, ATTITUDE! How can we get some attitude into our solos? Try adding dynamics, hit certain notes harder, be more rhythmic with your solos and don’t feel the need to play nonstop.
Thumbs! The thumb is your friend, it can be used to do lots of really cool things, check out ‘Neon’, ‘Stop this Train’, “Heart of Life’ by John Mayer and ‘Little Wing’ by Jimi Hendrix, these tunes are played using the thumb on the fretting hand. Yes, it is important to keep the thumb down when playing fast licks that require you to stretch, but it isn’t necessary to keep the thumb down at all times!
